Another early start, on the road by 8 to visit the (large) ancient site of Merv. We drove through it on the bus and got on/off for various sections, including Gaiyur Kala (fortress), Erk Kala and Sultan Kala. So, the ruins at these sites were mud brick buildings, it’s amazing they are still here in any form, but imagination (and being shown artists impressions) certainly helped visualize what was.
We also visited the mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar. In this cemetery area there were also burials of more recent people, some about 20 years ago.
Next we travelled across the Karakum Desert (Black Desert) towards the city of Turkmenabat. There we crossed the border back into Uzbekistan, again it took about two hours, and onwards to Bukhara.
