Wednesday 8 May - visit to Sark

Today was our first day of sightseeing and we visited the island of Sark. It is the smallest island of the Channel Islands, it has no motor vehicles, but tractors are used a lot - for getting visitors up the hill from the harbour to town, and for deliveries, even the mail is delivered by a post office guy on a royal blue bicycle. There is one mail box on the island, located outside the post office, that is painted in a gold colour, to acknowledge the gold medal won at the Olympics (held in London) by someone from here (apparently this is something they did in England, for winners, and they copied it here). We had an island tour, using a horse and carriage which let us see a lot more. It is a beautiful place, life seems very slow and relaxed, very quaint old English style. We had a lovely sunny day and I enjoyed it a lot. It may not be as nice during the winter! The island is very green, there are lots of wild flowers, and the coastline is rocky in places and has some lovely deserted beaches. It would have been nice to spend a few days here and meander around a little more.

The ferry ride, to get here from Jersey, was slightly more than an hour, ran by a French company, the boats went back to Granville, France at the end of the day (with passengers from there). The electricity here is generated in France, and the excess sold to these islands, apparently at a good price.

We arrived back at the hotel around 6:30, and after dinner went for a bit of a walk. Lots of sunshine, fresh air and walking - I’m hoping to sleep well again tonight.
